Learning in action: between urban research and social responsibility in and beyond the pandemic

It is a strange time to do urban research for young researchers. We have found ourselves in the midst of a global pandemic, the latest effect of the multifaceted crisis that our generation has lived through: that of capitalist production and environmental change. It is high-time to rethink this living in crisis. We share a responsibility to improve our capacities to understand and interpret this world for the well-being of society, above all by learning from those who bear the brunt of this crisis. Each of us, PhD candidates, works and researches through imaginaries of an alternative world and fairer cities. However, the complexities of our current times require new tools, discourses, approaches for care. This session is prompted by such renewed awareness and responsibility, as well as by the urge to discuss and dialogue with those who, before us, have highlighted these issues through field work and who can now share their experience in urban and social research.
Margherita Grazioli is a postdoctoral research fellow in Economic Geography in the Social Sciences area of the Gran Sasso Science Institute (L’Aquila). Her scholarship is focused on critical urban geography, housing policies and urban social movements, investigated through ethnographic, participatory methodologies. Her current research interest also beholds the formal and informal policies actioned by Rome’s local institutions in relation to housing squatters, urban social movements and civil society’s subjects. She is the author of the book “Housing, Urban Commons and the Right to the City in Post-Crisis Rome Metropoliz, The Squatted Città Meticcia” (2021, Palgrave Macmillan).
Carlotta Caciagli is a Research Fellow in sociology at the department of Urban Studies, Polytechnic of Milan (Italy). She holds a Ph.D. in Political Sciences from the Scuola Normale Superiore, in Florence. Her research interests include social movements, urban transformations under platform and digital capitalism, and socio-spatial inequalities. Her research has been published in international journals, such as Antipode, Critical Sociology and others. She recently published two books "Movimenti Urbani", edited by Mondadori, 2020 and "Housing movements in Rome. Resistance and Class", edited by Palgrave, forthcoming in October 4th.
